Meet Yash Kumar, Feisst Electrical Apprentice

Two years into his Feisst Electrical apprenticeship, Yash has no regrets on his career choice.

Yash joined Feisst straight out of high school, with zero electrical experience. So far, he’s worked on some key regional projects, including The Pa at the University of Waikato, McDonalds and Hamilton Airport.

“Being exposed to such a variety of jobs has helped me develop my skills and learn from multiple tradespeople” says Yash.

“I’ve always had the support I needed - from my managers, foreman and fellow apprentices, or whether it’s from my apprentice mentor pushing me to do my ‘on job’ assessments.

“The apprentice culture at our company is very positive; everyone is always encouraging helpful, especially with ‘on jobs’ and night class assessments, or if we are stuck in the field and need help with fault finding.”

What does being an apprentice involve?

Yash is based in the commercial electrical space. His current work involves pre-wiring, fitoff, switchboards labour, fault finding, liaising with the project manager and foreman about materials and deadlines. As one of the site team, he must also work with the architect and client expectations.

Yash also communicates with main contractors about schedule for works, health and safety paperwork and toolbox talks.

Why an electrical apprenticeship?

“Like most school leavers, I was quite unsure as to my future” admits Yash. “Consultation with family, friends and careers advisors led me to doing a trade - I’ve always been a hands on person, ready to do physical work, and it’s something that I enjoy.

“So, I started work experience through Feisst and worked at a couple different sites for a couple of weeks (whilst still at school) to see if it was something that I would enjoy, and I did!

“The main thing for me when it came to choosing a career was to do something that I’d enjoy for the next 20-30 years, and it’s safe to say I made the right decision, because every day in our electrical field is different, full of challenges and a lot of fun.”

And, why Feisst?

“I’d always heard good things about Feisst” says Yash. “As one of the biggest electrical companies in the Waikato region, they have a reputation for quality work and positive culture.

“When deciding on a career, I talked to (Feisst Electrical Contracts Manager) Shaz, who is a family friend, about the electrical industry.

“His explanation about the industry, the importance of our job, the risks, the commitment, and the fun parts influenced my decision heavily… Truth be told, I was sold when I heard about Friday Arvo Beers!”
